Obituary of Candida Zapata-Molina

Please share a memory of Candida to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Candida “Cookie” Zapata-Molina, 65, formerly of Somerset, NJ and last residing in Ashland, MA passed away peacefully on January 4, 2023.  She is predeceased by her parents Juan and Luz Zapata, husband Robert “Willie” Molina of 36 years, and survived by son Travis Molina formerly of Somerset, NJ, his spouse Beth, and son Jason Molina of Shrewsbury, MA and his spouse Gwen. Cookie is also survived by grand children Daniel, Isaac, and Solomon.

As the daughter of a veteran, Cookie’s formative years had her traveling between her birthplace of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, to Puerto Rico, and finally to NYC.  Much of Cookie’s life had been spent in NYC where she had a colorful career as a secretary at GE, then as park security and maintenance in Central Park where she saw much of the upcoming rock and pop scene of the late 70’s – early 80’s, followed by working in the Admissions Office at Pace University. Everywhere she went, Cookie carried herself with grace, self-respect, and determination.

Cookie’s greatest challenge was raising a family and passing on her knowledge, culture, and experience onto her sons. Cookie was heavily involved in the education and upbringing of her children. She fought valiantly to provide better opportunities for them to succeed. Cookie would always find a way to make things work out, which was her defining characteristic.

Cookie will be remembered for her personality, friendship, sense of community, love of cats, and for many her outstanding cooking. May she rest in peace after having lived a full life.

Friends and family in MA are invited to attend calling hours at Chiampa Funeral Home, 5 Church Road, Shrewsbury on Thursday, January 12, 2023 from 5:00-7:00 PM. In NJ on Saturday, January 21, 2023 a visitation at 10:00 AM and funeral mass at 11:00 AM will be held at St. Augustine of Canterbury Church, Kendall Park where she was a long-time parishioner.

In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation in Cookie’s name to the American Diabetes Association (https://diabetes.org/).

Arrangements are under the direction of M.J. Murphy Funeral Home, Monmouth Junction, NJ.
