Obituary of Barbara P. McWilliams

Please share a memory of Barbara to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Barbara P. McWilliams, 68, of Monroe Township died Saturday, December 31, 2022 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in New Brunswick, NJ she was raised in Piscataway and then resided in Kendall Park from 1979 until moving to Monroe Township in 2019. Barbara received her Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Douglass College in 1976.  She retired in 2008 with over 20 years of service as a School Teacher with the South Brunswick Board of Education, spending her later years with the district developing and implementing physical education curricula for students with special education needs.  She was the 2007 recipient of the Thomas Vodola Adapted Physical Education Award from the Society of Health and Physical Educators New Jersey.  She volunteered as a Girl Scout Leader, Softball Coach, Band Mom, Swim Team Official, and as a Bell Ringer for the Salvation Army. Barbara was a member of the South Brunswick Parks and Recreation Committee, South Brunswick Citizens for Independent Living (CIL), and the South Brunswick Republican Organization.

Her retirement in 2008 ushered in the best years of Barbara’s life, one in which she became known as “Nanny” to her four adoring grandchildren.  Together they enjoyed many sleepovers, movie nights, ice-cream sundae building competitions, and endless arts & crafts.  She traveled frequently with her husband to islands in the Caribbean and especially loved vacationing in Aruba with their dear friends and treasured the memories made on these trips.

Daughter of the late John and Evelyn (Clements) Pearce, she is survived by her husband of 46 years, John S. McWilliams Jr., her daughter and son-in-law Colleen and Jeff Santoro, her daughter and son-in-law Kelly and Michael Carella, and four grandchildren Ryan, Brayden, Connor, and McKenzie.  She is also survived by her sister Susan Carney and nephew Vincent, sister and brother-in-law Carol and George McGeehan, and her close cousins Linda and Jerry Swyka.  She counts her McWilliams brothers and sisters in law and many nieces and nephews as beloved family members.

The Funeral Service will be held 10:30 am on Friday, January 6, 2023 at the Nassau Presbyterian Church 61 Nassau Street, Princeton. Burial will be private.

A Visitation will be held on Thursday Evening, January 5, 2023, from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the M.J. Murphy Funeral Home 616 Ridge Road at New Road, Monmouth Junction.
