Obituary of Edward Joseph McHugh, Jr.

Please share a memory of Edward to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Edward Joseph McHugh, Jr. of Spotswood, New Jersey, passed away on December 23, 2022, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital of New Brunswick, surrounded by his family.  He was born on March 9, 1950, in Jersey City to Elizabeth Caddle Rooney and Edward McHugh, where he lived until moving to Spotswood in 1986.

On July 11, 1971, Edward married the love of his life, Jeanine Garigliano McHugh, in Jersey City, where they had two children, Kerry Wittenburg and Sean McHugh.  They have four amazing grandchildren, Robbie, Nicky, Joey, and Aidan, a great-grandson, Joseph Jr., and a beautiful niece Ahnaya, whom they have raised as their own.  Ed took extreme pride in his family, and they meant more to him than anything else in the world.

Ed was a combat veteran of the Vietnam War.  At the young age of 17, he was charged with protecting a village of Vietnamese natives from the North Vietnamese and Chinese armies.  He was profoundly proud to have served his country and always remembered those lives that were lost with the greatest honor.

In 1978, he entered the Jersey City Police Department, and his tremendous success quickly earned him the title of Detective, which he held with honor until his retirement in 2006.  During his time with JCPD, Ed worked with the Narcotics Squad, Special Investigations Unit, and Juvenile Squad.  While in the SIU, he uncovered and provided the FBI with crucial information that led to the identification and arrest of persons involved in the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center.  Ed worked on several high-profile cases in which he helped the federal authorities uncover critical information necessary to solve federal cases.

Ed spent several years traveling with his beloved wife to beautiful destinations such as Cabo, the Bahamas, and Bermuda, where they always invited family and friends to join them.  They treasured their memories together and never missed an opportunity to be around family and friends.  Together, they always opened their home to anyone who needed a place to stay and welcomed everyone with open arms.

Edward is predeceased by his parents, Elizabeth Caddle and Edward McHugh, and siblings Jaqueline McHugh Vicari, Patricia McHugh Zielinski, and Kevin McHugh.  He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Jeanine (Garigliano) McHugh; daughter and son-in-law Kerry and Robert Wittenburg and their children Robbie and Joey Wittenburg their grandson Joseph Wittenburg, son Sean McHugh and partner Giancarla Floridia and his children Nicholas and Aidan McHugh, sister Mary Wagner and beloved niece Ahnaya.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 29, 2022, from 2:00 – 4:00 pm and 7:00 – 9:00 pm at Murphy Funeral Home located at 616 Ridge Road at New Road, Monmouth Junction.
