Obituary of Astrea Corcelles
Astrea Corcelles, at the age of 99, of Franklin Park, NJ passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, December 8, 2022.
Astrea was born in Vega Alta, Puerto Rico on December 9, 1923. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Puerto Rico and she taught high school. She later transitioned to work as a statistician. She would meet the love of her life, Melchor Corcelles, at a bus stop after he insisted on paying the fare. They would go on to be married for 66 happy years. She enjoyed being a homemaker while raising two children. She also helped raise two grandchildren. One of them, Alejandro, has fond memories of drinking the Ovaltine she made. Natasha, the granddaughter, would help grandma cook and run to grandma after the oven ‘went ting!’ She would bond with her grandmother over their great faith and mutual devotion to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal. Her other grandson, Benjamin, looked forward to visiting her during holidays and appreciated her unconditional love for family. He has fond memories of her affectionate, grandmotherly backrubs and admiration of French culture. Astrea had a passion for French literature; anyone can remember her exclamations of “sacre coeur” and “ooh la la!” She enjoyed spending time with family, watching soap operas, shopping, and dressing up, known for her ever present red lipstick and Chanel No.5. Her husband, Mel, always looked forward to coming home to a wife who looked like a movie star. She was a perpetual beauty, inside and out. Astrea was known for her ‘Astreadas,’ her unique phrases and ways of being. Astrea never spoke a bad word about anyone; not one given to gossip in any form, she was exemplary in her focus on the positive side of people. Her genuine nature was roundly admired.
Astrea is survived by her husband Melchor Corcelles; her daughter and son-in-law, Astrid Corcelles and Bernardo Roig; her son and daughter-in-law, Carlos Corcelles and Barb Wallenberger-Corcelles; her grandchildren, Natasha Roig, Alejandro Roig, and Benjamin Corcelles; and her sister, Marta Carrasquillo. She is preceded by her mother and father Minerva Carrasquillo-San Antonio and Jose Carrasquillo; her sisters Laura Melendez and Norma Prieto; and her brothers Jose A. Carrasquillo and Hiram Carrasquillo.
A visitation will be held at 10am at St. Augustine of Canterbury Church, 45 Henderson Road, Kendall Park, NJ 08824 on Friday, December 16, 2022 with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10:30. She will be cremated and a private family service will be held on Saturday, December 17th, at Holy Cross Burial Park in South Brunswick, NJ.
