Obituary of James J. Horan
James J. Horan, 88, of Montgomery Township died Wednesday, November 23, 2022 at home. Born in Brooklyn, NY., he had been a resident of Staten Island for 60 years. Jim retired in 1979 as a Detective Captain with the New York Police Department. While on the NYPD, Jim was commander of the NYPD Crime Lab, where he received a commendation from New York Mayor Abraham Beame for his participation in the Son of Sam investigation. After retiring from the NYPD, Jim was a lecturer at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice. He was a board member of the American Society of Question Document Examiners and the American Academy of Forensic Science, as well as a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Son of the late James M. and Margaret (Taylor) Horan, he is survived by his wife of 62 years Marilyn (Nee) Horan, 3 sons and 3 daughters-in-law: James P. and Jennifer Horan, George and Michelle Horan, Michael and Diane Horan, a sister Margaret Hofmann, 6 grandchildren Teresa, Brigid, James, Michael, Timothy and Stephen.
The Funeral will be held 8:30 am on Wednesday, November 30, 2022 from the M.J. Murphy Funeral Home 616 Ridge Road at New Road, Monmouth Junction.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 am on Wednesday, November 30, 2022 at St. Patrick’s Church 53 St. Patricks Place, Staten Island, NY.
Burial will follow in the Resurrection Cemetery, Staten Island.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 29, 2022 from 2:00 -4:00 pm and 7:00 -9:00 pm at the funeral home.
