Shirley Pickton (nee Weinstock), of Elizabeth and Dayton, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on June 18, 2022 at the age of 90.
Shirley was born August 30, 1931, in Newark, New Jersey to Benjamin and Tillie (nee Kemp) Weinstock. The eldest of three children, she attended Peshine Avenue School, and graduated from Weequahic High School in 1950. Her first job was at Terry Fabrics, where she learned to speak Yiddish. Shirley spent many years working at her mother’s luncheonette in Newark and Elizabeth, NJ. She was a sales representative at Sargent Welch and State Hotel Supply, and as a bookkeeper at Fiorino Ristorante in Summit, NJ.
She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and made lifelong friends wherever she went. Shirley most enjoyed making things for others: knitting was her passion, making sweaters, blankets and hats for newborn children of people she loved. She was a noted challah and sponge cake baker, a ceramicist, candle maker, and sand terrarium designer. Her creativity and imagination would truly shine when crafting Halloween costumes from scratch for generations of family members. She also loved a good laugh.
Shirley was an active member of the B’nai Brith Women, Elizabeth chapter, enjoyed weekly Mahjong with her friends, and belonged to online knitting and crochet communities. She also enjoyed teaching others, having volunteered as a knitting instructor at the Jewish Family Services in Elizabeth.
Along with her husband, Paul, who preceded her in death in 2020, Shirley traveled the world on land and at sea. She is survived by her daughter Mindy (Steven) and son Craig (Fred), grandchildren Brad (Jess) and Gary (Natalie), great grandchildren Julian and Ella, and her dog Jubilee.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00am on Tuesday, June 21, 2022 at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, 189 Gill Lane, Iselin, NJ. Shirley's family will gather at the cemetery office at 9:45am before processing to the gravesite.
