Obituary of Esther Maria Mendoza

Esther Maria Mendoza, 89, of Monmouth Junction, NJ passed away at home peacefully surrounded by her loving family on April 14, 2022.

Born in Carolina, Puerto Rico to Louis and Isabella Carrasquillo in 1933, Esther had fond childhood memories of growing up in the countryside and riding her horses. At the age of 17, she moved to Brooklyn, New York with her family.  In 1953 she received a diploma at Spencer Secretarial School which led to her first job helping her community.  In the mid-1960s, she served on the Board of Directors of the Williamsburg Manpower Corporation, one of the earliest adult work readiness organizations in New York City.

Her life was based on a strong foundation of faith.  She was a devout Catholic, prayed the rosary daily and lived her life according to her faith. She gave of herself to everyone that knew her as she believed she was here to serve and not to be served. She lived it through her works and prayers.  She worked for social justice, voting rights, access to health care, fair housing, immigration, education, and what now is known today as living wage employment. She used her various roles in organizations including the Hispanic Action Project and the Crown Heights Manpower Corporation to build collaborative relationships throughout the neighborhoods.

Like her dedication to the community, Esther was devoted to caring for her family, living her faith, and having a positive impact on the people around her. Esther's generosity, kindness, and compassion will long be remembered.

Esther is survived by her husband of 67 years, Domingo; her daughters, Elizabeth Mendoza (Victor Mena), Annette Scudero-Cortez (Louis) , Sylvia Rosario (James) and Yvette Colon (Michael); her grandchildren, Janine Rosario, Michael Rosario, John Scudero, Kayla Scudero, and Jayson Mendoza; her great grandchildren, John Anthony and Jesse Alexander Scudero.

A Mass of Catholic Burial will be celebrated at St. Augustine of Canterbury Church, Kendall Park on April 21, 2022 at 10:30 am. A Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to the funeral at 9:30 am. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Burial Park.
