Obituary of Russell Edmund Smith

Russell E. Smith, 80, of Monmouth Junction passed away after a long illness and declining health on Wednesday, December 30, 2020 at home with his beloved wife and eldest daughter at his side. Russ, the youngest of 11 children, was born on August 31st at home in Shamokin, PA, 1940.

Russ, a resident of Monmouth Junction for 55 years, was last employed by the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier for 23 years in Kendall Park. Prior to that he worked for Macke Vending, Phelps Dodge and was a former member of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.  Russ, always gregarious was a member of many organizations including the VFW Post 9111 Men’s Auxiliary, the American Legion Post 401, and South Brunswick Senior Golf Association. He was also a past member of Friendly Sons of Shillelagh, the Loyal Order of Moose, the Friendly Sons of Ireland, the Elk Lodge and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. In his earlier years Russ was an avid outdoorsman; hunter, fisherman and later became a great lover of nature and would ensure all the woodland animals that frequented his property enjoyed all the snacks he left for them.  He enjoyed golfing trips each year and treasured the time spent with his greatest friends.  Russ was a prolific storyteller and jokester; always the life of the party and a friend to all.

A child during WWII, he developed an encyclopedic knowledge of the time, no doubt fueled by his admiration of his eldest brother’s service in the US armed forces.   He was a keen watcher of the history channel and enjoyed visiting the Air and Space Museum, where he could have just as easily been a tour guide.
