Obituary of Leonard Frank Sands Sr.

Leonard Frank (Lenny) Sands Sr., 80, of Kendall Park passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, November 11, 2020 at his home. Lenny was born in New York, NY and moved with his family to South Brunswick Township when he was 14 years old.  He graduated from Princeton High School in 1958.

Lenny was a true patriot and joined the Army National Guard at age 17.  He enlisted and went to fight in Vietnam as a member of the 1st Infantry Division, where he was wounded and received the Purple Heart award in addition to the Combat Infantry Badge and several other medals.

After serving in Vietnam, he settled in Kendall Park, NJ and continued military service with the Army Reserves.  He was a very active Life Member of VFW Post 9111 and participated in parades and the annual convention.  He served as the Post Commander. He was also a life member of the NRA and a member of American Legion Post 401.

Lenny was employed by the USPS as a mail carrier for the Kendall Park Post Office before retiring in 1995.

Lenny was a very kind person and was instantly liked by all who met him.  He loved cars, reading, history, and especially telling jokes or one of his endless supply of stories.  Most of all, he deeply loved his family.

He is predeceased by his parents Boh and Victoria (Petroski) Siew. He is survived by his daughter Christine Sands and her fiancé Kirk Weaver, his son Leonard Frank “Brother” Sands Jr. and his girlfriend Jennifer Trimpert, his sister Margaret Fry, two grandchildren Alexa Sands, Nicholas Sands and his wife Alyssa, great grandchild Sonny Sands, niece Maggie Kluxen, nephew Matthew Fry and his wife Lauren, and many more nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Visitation is on Tuesday, November 17, 2020 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the M.J. Murphy Funeral Home, 616 Ridge Rd at New Road in Monmouth Junction, NJ.  Visitations are limited to 30 people per hour due to COVID-19 restrictions. Burial services will be held at the Washington Crossing National Cemetery, 830 Highland Road, Newtown, PA  18940 at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, November 18, 2020.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to your favorite veteran organization in his name.
