“I have fought the good fight, I have finished my course. I have kept the faith.” II Timothy 4:7
After a three year struggle with metastatic breast cancer, Winifred “Winnie” Johnson Mitchell, 56, passed away on August 8, 2018 at Saint Peter’s University Hospital with family by her side. Born in Jersey City, New Jersey on September 25,1961, she was the third of five children parented by Morris F. Johnson Jr and Willie Mae (nee Hodge) Johnson.
A life long resident of New Jersey, she attended elementary school in Jersey City and graduated from Plainfield High School. In 1985, Winnie earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Rutgers University. She also earned a diploma from New York University in Paralegal Studies.
In 1988 she met the love of her life, Gordon Mitchell and in 1992 they married. Gordon has loved and cherished her for close to thirty years.
A woman of strong faith, Winnie was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Jersey City before relocating to central New Jersey where she became an active member of Hosanna South Brunswick Church. She enjoyed participating in Bible Study and consistently read the scriptures.
Winnie enjoyed reading, the theater, concerts, exercising at the gym and traveling with family and friends.
A beautiful human soul, Winnie was always encouraging others to pursue their dreams. She encouraged others not only through words but through action. Friends, family and coworkers all have memories of Winnie’s many acts of kindness. Possessing a heart of gold and a generous, thoughtful loving spirit, Winnie was an inspiration to many.
