Obituary of Ana "Betty" Sanchez

Ana Beatriz Sanchez, 78, known as "Betty" to family and friends, passed away at St. Peter's University Hospital on April 21, 2017, after a long battle with cancer.

Born in Cuba, the oldest daughter of the late Jose and Manuela Sanchez, Betty first came to the USA in 1957, to attend college in Danville, VA. She returned to Cuba in 1959 to attend the University of Oriente in Santiago for further studies. As a result of political unrest, she migrated to the USA with her younger sister at the end of 1961 and settled in New York. Later on, their immediate family joined them, residing first in Brooklyn and later in Flushing (Queens) where they spent many years. In 1987, Betty moved to Ronkonkoma (Long Island) where she stayed until 2009, when her illness caused her to relocate to Kendall Park, to live with her sister and brother-in-law.

During her working career, she was employed by the General Electric Co. in NYC and, after her retirement, also worked part-time for the Sisters of the Cenacle in Ronkonkoma. As an evening student, she also attended the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music in Queens for piano and voice lessons, forming part of the Conservatory Chorale and Choir of the Church of Mary's Nativity, Flushing. Years later, she joined the Choir of St. Joseph's Church in Ronkonkoma.

Throughout her life, Betty was a devout Catholic, and her greatest joy was to praise the Lord singing liturgical music. Upon moving to NJ, she became a member of the Adult Choir of her parish, St. Augustine of Canterbury Church, where she also participated in the Lazarus Ministry. She also enjoyed traveling abroad, and her last trip was to Krakow, Poland in 2015, where she was blessed with the opportunity to follow on the footsteps of St. John Paul II and St. Faustina Kowalska. She will be remembered for her devotion to the Divine Mercy, strong faith, courageous spirit, beautiful voice, and friendly smile.

Betty is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Miriam and Lawrence Bruni of Kendall Park, her brother, Jose M. Sanchez of Wellington, Florida, by two nieces and a nephew, their spouses, 10 great and 3 great great nieces and nephews in Connecticut and Florida, along with many friends.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday April 25, 2017 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM will be at the M.J. Murphy Funeral Home, 616 Ridge Road at New Road, Monmouth Junction. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM Wednesday April 26, 2017 at St. Augustine of Canterbury Church, 45 Henderson Road Kendall Park.
